Description Llangovan Church is of special interest as a summer roost for the lesser horseshoe bat Rhinolophus hipposideros. The site comprises a stone built Norman church and surrounding churchyard, situated on the east facing slope of a valley side in Llangovan, Monmouthshire. The bats roost in the apex of the main church and in a small roof space to the south side of the tower, but also have access to the main body of the church. A purpose built gap in the church porch allows access on a direct flight path. The site regularly supports a breeding roost of at least 100 adults as well as flighted juveniles. Remarks: The site is part of the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Bat Sites Special Area of Conservation. The lesser horseshoe bat is listed on Annex II (a) of the EC Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC on the Conservation of Natural Habitats of Wild Fauna and Flora). The lesser horseshoe bat is also protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
