Description This site yields the most diverse Gastrioceras cancellatum Marine Band fauna known in southern Britain, including goniatites, brachiopods, bivalves and crinoids. It is an horizon of considerable stratigraphical importance, since it is used to locate the boundary between the Marsdenian and Yeadonian stages of the Namurian, and a full understanding of its faunal composition is vital to its correct identification. The site thus plays an important role in establishing detailed correlations with other areas of Namurian deposition, particularly in the Pennines, Belgium and the Ruhr.
