Description

Description The site is a good example of mixed deciduous woodland developed on generally neutral soil conditions. There is a variety of tree species and a well developed ground-layer which includes uncommon species. Coed Ty-Mawr is situated on moderately sloping ground of eastern aspect on the banks of the river Banwy. Much of the land is fenced off from stock, but the northern portion of the wood is grazed. The dominant tree species is sessile oak, but the wood is a varied mixture of oak and ash with significant amounts of wych elm, rowan and holly. Beech and sycamore are also occasionally constituent of the canopy. Other tree species present include cherry, willow, field maple and alder. There is a well developed shrub-layer of hazel and hawthorn is frequent. Bramble Rubus fruticosus agg. is abundant. The wood has a good range of flowering plant species, the majority of which are well represented. The species tend to reflect the generally neutral to more base-rich soils and include false brome Brachypodium sylvaticum, barren strawberry Potentilla sterilis, sanicle Sanicula europaea and wood sage Teucrium scorodonia. The uncommon wood melick Melica uniflora is also well represented. However, a more acid flora is also present in places, with such species as common cow-wheat Melampyrum pratense occurring. great wood-rush Luzula sylvatica is locally abundant on the banks of the river and the nationally uncommon thin-spiked wood-sedge Carex strigosa has also been recorded from the site.
