Description Ddôl Uchaf is notified for its geological interest and its importance for Quaternary studies. This former quarry working contains tufa rich in organic deposits which have been radiocarbon dated. The dating has provided detailed biostratigraphical evidence for Flandrian environmental change. The tufa also contains fossils including beetle and plant macrofossils, not represented in the tufa from nearby Caerwys Tufa SSSI, although both contain fossil molluscs. The deposits at Ddôl Uchaf therefore amplify the record of Flandrian environmental change available from Caerwys Tufa and allow comparisons to be made between the different fossil indicators. Remarks: Ddôl Uchaf has been managed as an educational and biological nature reserve by the North Wales Wildlife Trust since 1965.
