Mining / Industrial: Quarry · Geological Period: Silurian
Description
Description This disused quarry is the only locality to yield the alga Powysia bassettii Edwards. Its affinities are problematical, for although it shares some characters with both the green, red and brown algae, it cannot be assigned with certainty to any of these groups and may represent a now extinct class. As one of only two fully described non-calcareous algae known from the Silurian, it is of international importance for understanding non-vascular plant evolution.
