Coastal habitats are exposed to sea-level rise and storm erosion. Where hard sea defences sit behind them, there's nowhere landward to retreat to — a squeeze that keeps compressing the habitat no matter how well it's managed.

Description
Ardsheal Peninsula Ardsheal Peninsula SSSI is situated 1.5km north west of the village of Duror, approximately 9km south west of Corran Narrows on the eastern shore of Loch Linnhe. The coastal sections on the Ardsheal Peninsula demonstrate the Appin Syncline, one of the major folds in the western part of the Grampian Fold-belt, produced as part of the earliest deformation of these Precambrian age Dalradian rocks. The site provides superlative examples of the minor folds produced by this deformation as well as evidence of the effects of a later period of deformation, superimposed on the earlier one. The site also provides excellent clean exposures of five stratigraphical units in the upper part of the Appin Group with clear evidence of the nature of the original sediments; it contains the type locality of one of them -the Cuil Bay Slates.
