Description
Roslin Glen Roslin Glen SSSI lies to the south east of Roslin village, approximately 3 km south of the town of Loanhead, Midlothian. The glen is a mixed deciduous valley wood consisting predominantly of ash, oak and elm with a ground flora characteristic of ancient woodland with continuous tree cover. It is the most diverse and largest remaining example of this habitat type in Midlothian. Although somewhat disturbed in places by past management practices, the wood is representative of ancient gorge woodland, a scarce and declining habitat in the Lothian area, and is one of the few remaining examples in Midlothian. The topographically diverse nature of the glen and the varied physical conditions mean that over two hundred species of flowering plants, a wide range of breeding birds and a rich lichen flora have been recorded from the wood.
