Climate exposure

This is about exposure to a nationwide pressure this habitat type carries — not a verdict on this site's own management.

Coastal

Coastal habitats are exposed to sea-level rise and storm erosion. Where hard sea defences sit behind them, there's nowhere landward to retreat to — a squeeze that keeps compressing the habitat no matter how well it's managed.

Description

DUNROBIN COAST The Dunrobin Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is situated on the shore just to the east of Dunrobin Castle, in east Sutherland. It lies on the foreshore between the low and high water marks and extends approximately 600m along the coastline. The site has been notified for the geological interest of its Lower Jurassic sedimentary rocks (200-176 million years old). Dunrobin Coast SSSI contains the only onshore exposure of Lower Jurassic rock in the Moray Firth Basin. These nationally important exposures show similar rock to that found under the North Sea. The rocks contain animal and plant microfossils, and document changing environmental conditions from river to near-shore and then deepening marine conditions. The site is important for understanding the geography and environment of the land that we now call Scotland during the Jurassic geological period.
