Description
AUCHENSAIL QUARRY Auchensail Quarry, lying 2km north of Cardross, is geologically important as it provides exposure of rock layers which contain fossilised plant remains. The rock layers were originally laid down by a large river during the Devonian Period of geological time, about 370 million years ago, The plant fossils found represent a low diversity flora consisting of two or three species that lived around the lakes and rivers of the once arid Midland Valley. The plant fossils are unusually well preserved, which has allowed very detailed studies to be made resulting in important contributions to our understanding of the evolution of the early plants. Auchensail Quarry is the best locality in Britain for the study of this assemblage of fossil plants and the research carried out here has led to a more detailed understanding of the geography of Britain during the Lower Devonian period of geological history.
