Rock Type: Limestone
Description
Description At this site the western embankment of the A272 road cutting exposes the Paludina Limestone BGS Bed 4 of the Lower Weald Clay Formation Wealden. The limestone 0.43 metres thick shows interesting diagenetic features and contains large Paludina Viviparus shells preserved in 3D. This facies is rarely exposed now. The limestone was once in great demand for interior work especially in ecclesiastical buildings and is of great interest to archaeologists, historians and architects.
