Description
Description The site provides continuous exposure across an anticline which shows the eastsoutheast trend of Caledonian structures on the eastern side of the Lake District. A cleavage, which is of a 'rough' type, is well developed giving good bedding/cleavage intersections. Careful measurement shows that the average cleavage 109/85 south transects the constructed axial surface 118/87 north by some 9° anticlockwise. This site is important not only as an example of the swing in Caledonian structure to eastsoutheast in the eastern Lake District, but also as an example of the change in the east to an anticlockwise transection of the folds by the cleavage. Both features have been used to demonstrate the progressive swing of Caledonian structures along the Midland Platform which acted as an indent or in the closing stages of the orogeny. This reentrant in the southern margin of Iapetus is an important piece of evidence towards the argument for the third arm of the Iapetus Ocean, 'Tornquists Sea', running between Baltica and Avalonia.
