Description

Description Brunton Bank Quarry, a key stratigraphic and palaeontological locality, displays a section in the basal Namurian great Limestone and is of great significance by virtue of the presence of the 'biostromic' reef like Chaetetes Band. The Chaetetes fauna is of particular interest as the affinities of this fossil group are still being discussed and the excellence of exposure at this quarry makes it a prime locality for their study. The quarry is additionally noteworthy as the type locality for Calcifolium bruntonense, a species restricted to the great Limestone. * Under Section 23 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.
