Description
Area, 55.8 hectares 137.9 ac Description The detailed form of the complex cave system at Stump Cross has been strongly influenced by its proximity to the North Craven Fault, such that passages tend to follow closely fracture lines and mineral veins resulting from faulting, an association unique in this area. The passages, formed largely by water flowing under considerable pressure beneath the watertable phreatic water, are now partially drained by mining operations. Three different levels of cave passages contain thick glacial sediments and calcite stalagmite formations. Investigation of these important deposits should enhance understanding of the recent geological history of this area.
