Description
Area, 4.78 ha. 11.8 ac. Description Jackdaw Quarry provides outstanding exposures of a succession in the Inferior Oolite strata of the Middle Jurassic. They show characteristics peculiar to the north Cotswolds and span the Junction between the Aalenian and Bajocian Stages of the Jurassic. The quarry faces expose a section through the Aalenian Oolite Marl 'series', Naunton Clay, Harford Sands, Snowshill Clay and Tilestone. The overlying 'conglomeratic' Lower Trigonia Grit, of Lower Bajocian age, is evidence that this site lay within an extensive area known as the 'Moreton Swell', which was uplifted in early Bajocian times. This is an important locality for geological studies in the north Cotswolds, of great value in reconstructing the geography of Middle Jurassic times.
