Geological Period: Permian · Rock Type: Limestone
Description
Area, 17.07 ha. 41 ac. Description The site is of Regional importance and contains good examples of ancient semi natural woodland and unpolluted open water. Biology Bulwell Wood is developed on superficial deposits overlying strata of the Permian Lower Magnesian Limestone. Although modified by the establishment of sycamore the dominant semi natural stand type, characterised by oak Quercus robur, ash Fraxinus excelsior, hazel Corylus avellana and rowan Sorbus aucuparia is still clearly evident. Much of the wood carries a ground flora characteristic of ancient woods including such species as wood anemone Anemone nemorosa, ramsons Allium ursinum, giant bellflower Campanula latifolia and early purple orchid Orchis mascula. In other areas this flora is replaced by one dominated by bracken. A valuable complement to the wood is the adjacent Bulwell Wood Hall Pond, a clean water pool having a well developed aquatic plant and animal community.
