Description
Area, 7.1 hectares 17.5 ac First Notified, 1984 Description This locality provides the best available ammonite bearing sections in the Upper Calcareous Grit in Yorkshire. It shows the Newbridge Beds and Spaunton Sandstone, above an unusually developed non fossiliferous Coral Rag facies equivalent. The sandy beds above the 'Rag' contain Decipia and Amoeboceras and these enable correlation with the Trigonia clavellata Beds of Dorset and the upper Staffin Shales of Skye. These are key sections in dating the final phase of Corallian sedimentation in Yorkshire. Other Information 1. This site is a new site identified as of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review. 2. It is adjacent to Newtondale SSSI.
