Description

Area, 3.3 hectares 8.1 ac Description Skelghyll Beck is situated 2 kilometres south east of Ambleside. The site is a long stretch of the beck which eventually flows into Lake Windermere. This is an important stratigraphic locality for its Llandovery Lower Silurian rocks. It is the type locality for the Skelgill Beds, of Rhuddian to Telyehian age. These rocks are the lowest Silurian strata in the Lake District. The formation is well known for its extensive well preserved graptolite fossil fauna.
