Mining / Industrial: Quarry · Geological Period: Jurassic · Rock Type: Limestone
Description
Area, 0.15 ha. 0.37 ac. Description This old quarry is an important site for the study of Middle Jurassic rocks of the Bathonian Stage. The limestones exposed here contain a highly significant assemblage of fossil ammonites enabling them to be very accurately dated as 'morrisi' zone rocks. In addition these limestones demonstrate the change in character that occurs in rocks of this age from the fine grained limestones of the Cross Hands Rock further south, to the coarser, oolitic limestones of Minchinhampton to the north east. Besides ammonites, the limestone also contain fossil corals, echinoids, gastropods and bivalves.
