Description
Area, 0.97 ha. 2.4 ac. Description This is an important geological site providing the best exposures of the Woolhope Limestone in the area in which it was originally identified. The limestone forms the lowestunit of the Wenlock Series in this part of the Welsh Borders and dates from the Silurian Period, about 410 million years ago. This quarry has been geologically important for over a century and is particularly noted as a source of fossils, which have been described and illustrated in several publications. This is a key reference locality for the Woolhope Limestone, a rock unit widely distributed in the Wenlock outcrops of the southern Welsh Borders.
