Geology & landscape

Geological Period: Precambrian, Silurian

Description

Area, 0.2 ha. 0.4 ac. Description At this site the Pentamerus Beds – the lowest beds of the Silurian in this area – overlie Precambrian strata, displaying the maximum extent of local pre Llandovery angular unconformity. A diverse brachiopod fauna characterises these rocks and interbedded silty shales contain conodonts and acritarchs – micro fossils useful in dating rocks. This is an important site for the study of stratigraphic relationships in the Shropshire area.
