Description
Description This old site, first described in the early years of the nineteenth century, shows the most northerly outcrop of the Portland and Purbeck Beds in England. The site lies close to the northern extremity of the southern Portlandian depositional basin and this is of considerable interest in palaeographic reconstruction. Ostracod faunas occurring within this sequence have been used in a detailed study of salinity changes across the Portland Purbeck junction. This locality provides an exposure of the thickest Portlandian succession existing at the surface in the counties of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire and is therefore considered to be vital to our understanding of late Jurassic environments, stratigraphy and palaeogeography.
