Description
Description This is an outstandingly important geological site providing exposures of the Wenlock Series of the Silurian System which enable correlations to be made between Shropshire’s standard sections for the Wenlock and the overlying Ludlow Series. The Farley Member of the top of the Coalbrookdale Formation and the basal Wenlock Limestone which lies immediately above here both yield graptolites which have been instrumental in dating the base of the Wenlock Limestone. In addition their presence has proved a correlation between the base of the Wenlock Limestone of Wenlock Edge and that of the Ludlow Anticline. This is of critical importance in defining the scope of the standard Wenlock Series. This correlation is based on the presence of the characteristic graptolite fossil Monograptus ludensis. This was once taken to be an indicator of the base of the Ludlow Series, which lies above the Wenlock Limestone; here however, this fossil is found in the top of the Farley Member and the base of the Wenlock Limestone. This places the contact between the two firmly in the topmost zone of the Wenlock Series.
