Description

Shapwick Grange Quarry SSSI Description The quarry is the only locality in Devon to have yielded an in situ ammonite fauna belonging to the disparzone (Albian Stage) of the Cretaceous Upper Greensand. It is of vital biostratigraphic importance as this gives a precise relative date for this deposit locally, at a time when there is still controversy over the age of this widespread formation in south-west England. This is a key site for palaeogeographic and stratigraphic studies in the Lower Cretaceous.
