Geology & landscape
Geological Period: Jurassic · Rock Type: Sandstone
Description
Description A key stratigraphic locality for the Oxfordian Stage. The site contains sections in the Lower Calcareous Grit and the Seend Cleave Sandstone and has yielded a substantial assemblage of fossil ammonites which prove a cordatum densiplicatum Zone age for the rocks which occur. A large fauna of fossil bivalves has been collected from the sandstones which occur here. This is a nationally important site because of the information which it yields for biostratigraphic correlation of the Jurassic System.
