Description

Area, 2.3 hectares 5.7 ac Description The small, late Namurian section at Crag Gill consists of a Yoredale type sequence of limestones, sandstones and shales. Of particular importance is the presence of the Whitehouse Limestone, forwhich this is the type locality. This is of particular significance as this marker horizon is the uppermost distinct limestone occurring in the Namurian of the ‘Yoredale area’. Additional interest is provided by the presence of goniatites, rare in the Yoredale, which enable these rocks to be roughly equated in time with Kinderscoutian aged rocks in other areas.
