Geological Period: Ordovician
Description
Area, 0.7 ha. 1.73 ac. Description This is an important series of exposures of key stratigraphic interest for rocks of the upper Ordovician System in Britain. The Costonian Stage of the Ordovician Period is named after this area, which lies in the classic geological area of south Shropshire. The rocks originally accumulated as sand and mud on the bed of a shallow sea and are rich in fossil remains. A number of species of both brachiopods and trilobites were first collected and described from these outcrops.
