Description
Area, 0.13 ha. 0.32 ac. Description The old quarry at Humbledon Hill is renowned for its fossiliferous exposures of Magnesian Limestone which are cut through a reef knoll and flanking limestones associated with the Middle Magnesian Limestone Reef Complex. The abundance of marine fossils including sponges, brachiopods, bivalves and gastrapods is of particular interest comparable to few other sites which have yielded a shelly fauna of similar Permian age. The site is of importance to geologists studying the Middle Magnesian Limestone Reef Complex. Other Information 1. This site is identified as of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review. 2. The site boundary has been reduced during the 1935 revision. 3. As a condition of Planning Permission the rock face is excluded from the gardens of adjacent houses under Clause 52 of the Town and Country Planning General Development Order, 1950. * Under Section 23 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, 1949.
