Description
Area,1,10 0001.4 hectares 3.5 ac Description Lowside Brickworks is located near the centre of Oldham. The site comprises a disused quarry on a steep hillside near Glodwick, to the south east of the town centre. This is the best exposure in the Pennines and adjacent coalfields for yielding a Carbonicolacristagalli Subzone non marine bivalve fauna, of late Westphalian A Middle Carboniferous. It is of particular interest as it shows how the bivalves interacted with the sediments, which is important for understanding the morphological variation of these biostratigraphically significant fossils. As one of a sequence of sites in the Pennines area demonstrating the ‘standard sequence’ of Coal Measures non marine bivalves faunas in great Britain, this site is of national scientific importance.
