Coastal habitats are exposed to sea-level rise and storm erosion. Where hard sea defences sit behind them, there's nowhere landward to retreat to — a squeeze that keeps compressing the habitat no matter how well it's managed.

Description
Area, 1.7 ha. 4.2 ac. Description Glebe Quarry is a key site showing rock in the Cementstone Group of the Carboniferous Limestone, of Chadian age. It lies in a palaeogeographically critical position within the Northumberland Trough. In this vicinity in Chadian times lay a fluctuating dividing line between two environmentally distinct areas. To the north east lay deposits laid down in the hypersaline lagoons and riverine estuarine and deltaic environments typical of the Cementstone Group. To the west the rocks of the Lower Border Group are marine and deltaic in origin. Glebe Quarry shows a variety of lithologies and contains one of the richest and thickest deposits of continuous algal oncolite limestone to be found at any site representing the British Dinantian. * Under Section 23 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.
