Description
Area, 1.1 ha. 2.7 ac. Description This quarry is of great historical and stratigraphic interest for its Lower Greensand exposure. This is the type locality and the best available exposure of the Marehill Claynolani or rubricosus Subzone, a clay member of the Sandgate Beds. It shows the junction of this unusual unit with the Pulborough Sand Rock below – the latter being exposed at the surface and in well preserved adit's. The presence of a well developed clay member in the Sandgate Beds of the southern Weald outcrop is in marked contrast to the normal facies development exhibited by this formation in the remainder of the Weald.
