Geological Period: Devonian · Rock Type: Sandstone

Description

Area, 0.4 ha. 1.0 ac. Description This is an important site locally for studies of vertebrate palaeontology. The Old Red Sandstone rocks here have yielded a fossil vertebrate fauna of Dittonian Devonian age. Fifteen species of 'fish' have been recorded from the site and this is the type locality for seven species, five of which are unique. Stratigraphically this is the highest i.e. youngest 'fish' fauna from the highly fossiliferous Dittonian Strata of the area. Faunas from here may be compared with those of Pembrokeshire, Spitzbergen, Belgium and Podolia Ukraine, but have little in common with other Welsh borders localities.
