Description
Area, 0.6 ha. 1.5 ac. Description At its exposure beside the Killhope Burn the Old Moss Lead Vein is a readily accessible outcrop of a mineral vein which provides an important teaching locality showing mineralisation typical of the inner flourite zone of the North Pennine Orefield. This vein, here 5 metres thick and trending N E– S W through the great Limestone, is seen to be a complex structure. The central part of the vein carries fresh galena and sphalerite, with purple flourite well crystalised in the outer zones where siderite is also a conspicuous component. A second vein, some 20 metres upstream is also included in the site. Other Information 1. This site has been identified as of national importance the Geological Conservation Review under the name Killhope Head. 2. At this revision the site has been amended to exclude some land previously notified*and to include further areas not previously notified*. * Under Section 23 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, 1949.
